Add color to your desk with Aqua Color and Bring back Spring

2014/02/20

Bring back spring to your home with this easy DIY craft and cardstock papers. I came up with this craft on a whim. It was a gloomy afternoon with endless rain, and I needed to brighten up my mood with a colorful project I started with four natural woodblocks and painted them with 1 coat of white “Ceramcoat” paint. Once the paint was dry, I chose two styles of tape one grey and the other an aqua pattern. I guess I can’t stay away from the color “grey” during the winter months ;) The finished woodblocks gave me a direction to choose two aqua and grey cardstock and notebook from a previous craft. Please take a look below at a brief tutorial, materials, and photos.

I purchased a box of milk bottles at Paper-Source, and they are becoming one of my favorite objects to decorate with around the house. Inside the milk bottle, I have three paper straws, and birds cutouts from a previous craft. These would make nice cake toppers but for now, I’m using them as “birdie” flowers. The wood blocks turned out simple and modern. I will use them as decor or as paperweights.

This is the finished and styled craft for my office area. In the past, I’ve seen clipboards used as “frames” for artwork and this time I used a Kraft clipboard to display a cardstock by American Crafts.  Tutorial and materials follow below.

Tutorial

Bring back spring by kraft&mint office area

  1. Gather your materials: painted wood blocks, grey packing tape, Washi tape and Exacto knife
  2. Apply grey packing tape to two sides of the blocks. Use an Exacto knife to trim the tape.
  3. Apply Washi tape to the opposite sides of the grey tape. The Exacto knife comes very handily to accomplish a nicely finished look.
  4. Wood blocks are ready to go and should look like picture #4

Materials

  1. Four natural woodblocks found at any craft store, size 2″ by 2″ inches
  2. Ceramcoat acrylic paint in white found on Amazon
  3. CROSSHATCH Grey Pattern Decorative Packing Tape. I saw this tape on a European online craft store and fell in love with it! Then I found it on Etsy at Le Paper Cafe
  4. MENAGE A TRIO (Damask/Prismatic/Diamonds) Japanese Washi Paper also found at Le Paper Cafe.
  5. American Crafts “Polka Dots Party” cardstock found at Ben Franklin Crafts.
  6. Pebbles “Family Ties” card stock also found at Ben Franklin Crafts.
  7. Grey paper straws found at Amazon.
  8. Kraft clipboard from Ben Franklin Crafts.
  9. Blue enamel vase from Save-on-crafts

I also tried the wood blocks on my bedroom mantle. This time I used an enamel aqua vase, with dried white branches. If you look closely at the branches, you’ll see I used the “birdie” flowers inside the vase. The black and white photo was a gift given to me by a dear friend. Finally, the clipboard and blocks work as nice accent objects surrounding the black and white photo. What do you think? I put together both displays (office and bedroom mantle) in under 1 1/2 hours. This is definitely a quick craft and affordable way to slowly transition to Spring and stir away from the winter blues ;) As always, I’m very thankful you read and visit my blog. I hope I’ve inspired you to start decorating for spring and in the process enjoy such a quick craft as the wood blocks. It is amazing how just a few objects can help you create a whole new look.
