Quick Crafts: DIY Terrarium Tutorial

2014/05/12

DIY Terrarium by kraft&mint

I made this terrarium a few weeks ago, during a crafternoon with friends from my son’s school. We made 20 of them, and they served as centerpieces for my son’s school auction. The auction was this weekend, and I’m sooo happy I got to take one home! I wish I could have taken more home but now I’m going to have to make a few more! Please take a below at very simple instructions and materials below.

Tutorial:

  1. Place gravel rocks or small pebbles at the very bottom of a glass container. The small rocks will prevent water from “sitting” at the bottom of the container when watering.
  2. Add on top of the gravel, gardening charcoal, which keeps odors from developing.
  3. Next add a layer of moss that helps water from seeping into the bottom.
  4. Add another layer of soil, about two to three inches deep, depending on the size of the glass container.
  5. Carefully plant the plants by digging a small hole into the soil. Voila, you have a terrarium. Please note that the terrarium does not have a lid. The reason behind this is that I will add a few succulent plants. These plants thrive in high light and dry environments. Traditionally an enclosed terrarium would create a very humid atmosphere for the succulent plants and this is not good for succulents ;)

Love it! I hadn’t heard of gardening charcoal but have been afraid to make a terrarium because of rot. This looks beautiful and oh-so-simple!

I love this, I did a post on my old blog about DIY terrariums as I wanted to build one but could not find any of the specialy glass bubbles they used locally, I would never have thought of using this and best of all I have one of these glasses packed away in a cupboard unused somewhere. Thanks for sharing on Wonderful Wednesday Blog Hop. I am very excited to find your blog and this project. Rachel
