Add washi tape to tall birthday candles

2014/06/26

kraft&mint washi tape+candles

Isn’t washi tape the best? It is one of my favorite crafting products, and I’m always on the hunt for modern designs and great colors. The idea of wrapping washi tape to white tall birthday candles, came to me on a whim, when I threw a birthday party for my husband about 6 weeks ago.

I baked a tall yellow cake with white frosting and wanted to add a fun element to the cake. The theme colors for his party were white, gold and black. I remembered I had a roll of washi tape with a gold polka dot pattern that would go perfectly with the party’s colors theme. It took me a few minutes to add tape to all the candles, and voila, I had instant cute candles to decorate the cake.

Friendly reminder a few links are affiliate links ;)

Materials

  • Gold polka dots washi tape
  • Multicolor dots tape
  • Geometric mint washi tape
  • Skinny tall candles

You can view all the details for that party on this post. Following that party, I threw another party for my daughter who just turned five. She asked for a pink cake, just like daddy’s cake but all pink. I used the same idea and wrapped pink and white washi tape to the same white candles. The candles were a hit and a few people asked me where I got them… I had to share my secret with them and now with you! Please take a look below for a quick visual tutorial and brief instructions.

Tutorial

kraft&mint add washi tape to tall birthday candles craft

kraft&mint washi tape + tall birthday candles

  1. Choose a fun washi tape pattern.
  2. Cut a strip with at least one inch between the candle’s wick and washi tape.
  3. Admire your creation
  4. Experiment with different washi tape designs.

DISCLOSURE: For safety issues I NEVER leave my washi tape candles unattended. For birthdays, what I do is light the candles, sing Happy Birthday and blow them right away. If I used them for decoration purposes, I rather not light them up. I’ve never let the washi tape “burn” as not to cause a fire hazard.

Thank you for reading and visiting kraf&mint. I always love to read your thoughts under the comments section, they make my day! Have fun decorating your next cake ;)

Yes! Though I wrapped the washi tape, leaving half inch between the wick and tape! That way the tape won’t catch on fire. Since this is for birthday candles, then they are only lit for a minute or so. And hot wax dripping wasn’t a problem. Does this make sense ? ;)
