DIY Peacock Costume Guest Post Tutorial

Hello! Today I have a guest on kraft&mint. Her name is Bridgette, and she is a dear friend of mine. Please take a look below at how she made a “feathered” tail, peacock mask and a cape ;)

When my daughter said she wanted to be a peacock for Halloween, the first thing I did was look to Pinterest for inspiration! I love making Halloween costumes and usually like my kids to have something that isn’t the typical store-bought costume that you see on all the other kids.

Tail feathers
Materials needed – felt – three colors
Wide Bias Tape or Ribbon

I am not nearly talented enough to sew a dress for P to wear, so I bought a blue princess dress on zulily – got a great deal on it too. It really needed something to make it look more like a peacock though.

I found some inspiration for paper tail feathers and though – I’ll just make them out of felt instead since I already have it around. I just cut some long large feather shapes and circles – sewed the circles on at the bottom and then just cut the feather fringe into the felt – super simple.

Then measured a length of bias tape to tie around P’s waist. Laid the bias tape flat and arranged the feathers on the back half – allowing overlap of feathers. Pinned in place and sewed to bias tape. Tie in front.

Mask
Materials needed – felt – your choice of colors
Fusible webbing
elastic

For the mask, I started the pattern by tracing another felt mask that fit my daughter for size. That gave me the eye placement and general size. I then sketched out the outline and layers on butcher paper and cut out the felt pieces.

To start, I did a double layer of the base mask and fused the two pieces of felt together so it would have a bit more strength. Then I layered on the additional pieces and sewed them on.

If you don’t have a sewing machine, I think you could use the fusible webbing to create as well – you just wouldn’t get the stitching details on the feathers. I sewed on the elastic last – making sure not to get it too tight on P’s little noggin.

Cape – trying to figure out the best way to describe this – it took the longest to figure out.
Materials needed – felt
Wide Bias Tape

Created a pattern based off a half circle skirt or cape. Created a pattern using butcher paper and drew a series of half-circles in layers to represent the layered feathers. I cut the circles for the peacock spots and sewed them onto the feather layers before sewing the feather layers onto the cape base. At the top of the cape, three layers of felt are bound together with the bias tape that can then be tied around the child’s neck.
