I was doing a search on “religious” crafts for young kids and found a lovely pin, featuring Joseph, Mary and Baby Jesus. The project consisted of painted wood blocks and burlap. Immediately I thought this craft would be perfect for my second grader’s Christmas party, so I went to my local Michael’s store and found the materials to re-create this craft.

Materials:

• Jenga blocks
• White paint
• Glue
• Wood doll head found at Michaels
• Small rectangle wood block 2″ x 1 ” , also form Michaels,
• Burlap
• Barker’s Twine
• Wood buttons

Tutorial Joseph, Mary and Baby Jesus Wood Craft

The original craft looked like this, and I decided to give it a minimalistic look painting all characters in white, kept the burlap and for baby Jesus face, I used a wood button. First, I glued one head doll to one Jenga block and let the glue dry for 45 minutes. Then I glued a wood button to a smaller rectangular block. Once the glue was dry I painted all the parts with white acrylic paint. Finally, I wrapped a piece of burlap around Mary’s shoulders and used baker’s twine so Mary would look like she is holding baby Jesus.

My son’s class has 16 kids total, so two wood blocks per child resulted in 32 blocks. Buying all these blocks was pretty pricey, so the Jenga blocks came in very handy.

My son’s class is scheduled for Friday December 18th, when his school gets out for Christmas break. I can’t wait to see their version of Joseph, Mary and Baby Jesus wood craft!
